  • Descrizione: this chapter begins by offering a few observations about the relationship between material culture and memory. it distinguishes between two approaches to the preservation of material culture‐ conservation and conversion. the chapter examines two case studies, the preservation of film and the preservation of newspapers, in order to illustrate some of the challenges that are associated with long‐term preservation of popular culture records. it concludes with a few specific observations regarding the preservation, restoration, and accessibility of popular culture materials. the opportunity to make decisions about what to keep and what to throw away what to remember and what to forget is also the consequence of enormous luck and privilege. digital media complicate the challenges associated with long‐term preservation on many levels. one of the major challenges of digitization is that the lines of responsibility for future information migration need to be anticipated in the budgeting and planning of projects.
